Perhaps you have experienced it-you meet someone and the physical attraction and chemistry between the two of you is off the charts. So, being the red blooded human beings that you are…you act on it-and the sparks fly. You intend to walk away without looking back, but you find yourself having a conversation with him or her-and you want to do it again. Can you have a friend with benefits?

A friends with benefits relationship can work if both of you are on the same page. You have your fun private time and maybe go to lunch, too. Instead of kicking him out right after the deed is done, you watch t.v. Fun, right?! No expectations-or are there? For a friends with benefits situation to be fun, you have to communicate. You also have to give your “friend” space. Remember, he is not your boyfriend and shouldn’t treat you like it. While respect is mandatory, don’t start acting clingy or needy. Have fun-inside the bedroom and out, and enjoy spending time with someone of the opposite sex…you don’t need to settle down right now, do you?

Many friends with benefits relationships tend to end up the same way-one person gets attached or falls in love, and the other person does not reciprocate. This leads to messy, painful things like jealousy, insecurity and feeling used. If you are the type of person who loves being in a committed relationship, a friends with benefits situation is probably not the best fit for you, so it’s best to not even try. If the thought of your lover going on a date with someone else makes you green with jealousy, don’t do it! Know what you can and can’t handle before you put yourself through this.  A friends with benefits lifestyle isn’t for everyone.

Bottom line, it’s different for everyone. No matter what, it’s important to be honest with your partner and yourself about what you expect and want. It is more than ok to leave things at a one night stand-not everyone needs to be your best friend!
